Matt Corey Bio
Matt Corey makes no claims of being an innovator, and is usually the first to point out, that jazz musicians have been playing pop tunes since the beginning of jazz. This unlikely musician who has had an uncanny ability to connect with audiences is fresh off the heels of a 6 year tour of colleges and universities nationwide. In a time that instrumental music accounts for less than 2% of music sales nationally, it seems almost impossible that a saxophonist would be an in demand act, performing on almost 500 college campuses nationwide and being awarded the honor of “Male Solo Artist of the Year” for five of those six years.
Matt is a graduate of Ohio’s Youngstown State University where he studied music education and jazz performance. It was at YSU where he formed a friendship with Billy Beck, original keyboard player for legendary funk group The Ohio Players. It was this relationship that firmly planted his roots in the funk and even led to playing with Dr Funkenstein himself, George Clinton. His next stop was alongside smooth jazz saxophonist Jessy J as one of the lead performers in the sequel to the Tony Award winning Broadway show Blast! The show enjoyed a lengthy stay at Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center before packing up and looping the U.S. for a national Theatre tour before landing again in London, England for an extended stay at the Queen’s Theatre on the famous West End. Matt’s performance, in particular, was well received by critics. “Exquisite solos” raved London Theatre Guide while Variety magazine dubbed him the “Real Sound.”
In addition to leading his own band, Matt has spent great deal of time performing as a sideman. He held down saxophone duties in nationally touring rock group Skinny (now known as the Atlanta based Jacob & the Good People), a gig that found him performing on bills with the likes of Lil Wayne, Dave Matthews, Robert Randolph, and even the Average White Band. He has also traveled extensively with rock trio Hey Monea. A role that has found him cruising the Caribbean with the likes of Kid Rock, 311, Sister Hazel, Rebelution, Red Wanting Blue, and Boston’s Bad Rabbits on spirited outings produced by floating music festival super promoters Sixthman.
Matt continues to record and perform regularly seeking to build on an already impressive resume as a leader that includes support performances for such notable artists as Common, Joe Walsh, Dave Koz, George Benson, Mike Posner, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, B.O.B., Far East Movement, O.A.R., and Michael Franti among others. His newest project, produced by longtime friend Jody Daniels of Reelphat Music Group, features covers by Bruno Mars, Kool & the Gang, Michael McDonald, Huey Lewis & the News, and more!
